Cacilhas is a vibrant and eclectic waterfront neighborhood.
It was a former industrial quarter that is still being revitalized with a strong local community and today it’s a place to hang out, taking in the amazing views of Lisbon from across the Tagus, grab a drink or a meal at one of the many excellent restaurants, known for seafood, but here you can also get everything from traditional Portuguese tapas and steaks, to pizza, gelato and Indian food. There is an Irish pub down the street, a bookstore cafe that plays jazz music most evenings, vintage clothing stores, yoga, meditation and wellness studios offering reiki, acupuncture and therapeutic massages, great coffee shops. There is a small gourmet food market with escape room games, as well as a pharmacy, supermarkets, boutiques, flower and art shops and a tourist information center.
Lisbon's Chiado and Cais do Sodre is a 7 minute ferry ride away where you can also reach the historic quarters of Baixa and Alfama easily on foot.
Rua Cândido dos Reis is pedestrianized and laid with restaurant terraces, while the riverside Cais do Ginjal has a unique atmosphere for its old warehouses and fantastic views of the river, the 25 de Abril bridge and Lisbon. Visit the Boca do Vento elevator, which is attached to the cliff on the riverfront, the Jardim do Rio and Almada Velha, which has an amazing art deco movie theater, a contemporary art center, Casa da Cerca, and some incredible street art.
There are two naval vessels on display in Cacilhas. One is a rather rusty submarine the other is the more noteworthy Dom Fernando II e Glória, a wooden, 50-gun frigate of the Portuguese Navy restored in 1998 to her glory days of the 1850's. The ship was Portugal's last sailing warship and was built in the Portuguese colony of Daman, north of Goa in India, in 1843.
Less than 3 kms away, just a half hour walk, is the famous Cristo Rei. This monumental statue is slightly smaller than the Rio landmark that inspired it, and stands at just under 80 meters. On the statue’s pedestal, you can see the entire Tagus Estuary, Lisbon’s historic quarters and the 25 de Abril Bridge.
If you are into beaches, surfing, kitesurfing, it's just 15 minutes drive to the spacious and natural beaches of Costa da Caparica, and a few more minutes to Fonte da Telha, with its white sand beach that goes for kilometers and backed by limestone cliffs and pine trees. From here you can sometimes see dolphins, always spectacular sunsets. Stunning and relaxing Portinho da Arrábida beach is just about a 35 minute drive.
We are located across from the old light blue Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso, built in 1759 with an ornate gilded interior and tile panels.
Cacilhas has lots to see and do and is a cool, eclectic, and vibrant local community, and an emerging gem of a place and Lisbon is easily accessible. Come and see us!
Ola! We are Pam and Daniel and we met right here in the gorgeous city of Lisbon. I am British, Daniel is Portuguese. I am an expat from London and San Francisco and have lived in Lisbon for over a decade. Daniel was born in Lisbon, a local with roots in Alentejo. He knows Portugal like the back of his hand and is a wealth of knowledge about this lovely little country. When we're not hosting great guests we dance, we cook, we travel, we eat, we hang with our tribe all over the world. We are also property consultants and are happy to arrange real estate tours and regular tours to visit the many amazing places to visit in Portugal.
